| New AAEP Web Site Delivers More Equine-Health Resources
Guided by its mission to improve the health and welfare of the horse, the American Association of Equine Practitioners has relaunched its Web site, http://www.aaep.org, with new educational tools for veterinarians and the addition of equine-health resources for horse owners. The AAEPs site formerly dedicated to equine health for the non-veterinarian myHorseMatters.com is now part of aaep.org. Veterinarians and horse owners can conveniently access customized equine health articles and tools in the same location. The AAEP site will continue to offer its popular online resource for horse owners, Ask the Vet. Each month an AAEP-member veterinarian answers questions from horse owners on a specific topic. During the month of March, Dr. Danielle Bercier from Baldwin Animal Clinic in Summerdale, Ala., discusses equine ophthalmology.

Microkeratome-assisted posterior lamellar keratoplasty can be used as an alternative to penetrating keratoplasty for treating patients with pseudophakic or aphakic corneal edema, according to a small study by researchers in Iran. Hasan Hashemi, MD, and colleagues at Tehran Medical Science University reviewed outcomes for 10 patients treated for corneal edema. Nine patients were pseudophakic and one patient was aphakic, according to the study. In all cases, surgeons used an automated microkeratome to create 130-µm to 250-µm thick nasal hinged corneal flaps. They then exchanged the underlying 7 mm of deep stroma and endothelium with a similarly sized donor graft fixated without sutures. Surgeons closed the corneal flap using sutures, which were removed 3 to 5 months postop, according to the study.
President Kufuor commended for promising neutrality
A final year student of the Department of Optometry of the Kwame Nkrumah University f Science and Technology has commended President Agyekum Kufuor for saying that he will be neutral in the election of a flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The student, David Atta-Acheampong who made the commendation told the Daily Graphic in Kumasi that the Presidents decision was one of the best as it would definitely be in the interest of the party.
Mr. Atta-Acheampong said when he read from the political page of the March 20 edition of the Daily Graphic that the President addressed the first International Delegates Conference of the NPP in London, where he made the statement; "I felt that the President's acclaimed maturity was at display.
He also referred to another statement by the President that the processes outlined by the party would enable it to select a flag bearer who would be able to unite the party and win the forthcoming elections.
California Prune Board launches handbook for promoting prunes in India
Riding high on the growing trend of health food in India, the California Prune Board has launched a handbook for promoting prunes as a health food here. The handbook titled 'Handbook of Scientific Information on the Nutritional Health Benefits of Prunes' has been compiled by leading nutrition immunologist Alka Verma, and launched by Richard L Peterson, executive director of the board. Peterson says, "Increasingly people world over look towards the nutritive values of not merely sustenance but well being foods. California Prunes can play a role in preventing cancer as they are exceptionally high in antioxidant activity and may help prevent the development of heart and lung diseases, some cancers, cataract formation and effects of aging." According to Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, with changing lifestyle, people in India wish to eat food with health benefits and California Prunes can be incorporated in various Indian cuisines.
