Leukemia can vary in degree of severity

When Harry Lee announced Tuesday he has leukemia, he left a crucial question unanswered. Jefferson Parish's seven-term sheriff knew he had some form of the disease -- which haunts bone marrow and warps white blood cells -- but said he couldn't remember which one and wouldn't authorize his doctors to talk.

For a man resolute about running for re-election this fall, that information would go a long way toward gauging the gravity of his condition, other doctors said.

"It depends very much as to what kind he has," said Dr. Jayne Gurtler, an East Jefferson General Hospital oncologist. Though some types require nothing more than supervision, "there are some forms of leukemia that without very aggressive treatment can kill you in a matter of weeks," she said.

Leukemia comes in two general forms, partly defined by their aggressiveness.

Tragedy after blast: There is not much hope for Kuldeep’s eyes

New Delhi, April 6: Former bus driver Kuldeep Singh, who risked his life on the day of the Delhi blasts to save his passengers, has been admitted at Dr Shroffs Charity Eye Hospital with a severe eye infection. Doctors here said that chances of him getting back his eyesight are minimal.

On October 29, 2005, Singh was driving a packed bus on the outer Mudrika route. When the bus was near Govindpuri in south Delhi, passengers noticed an unclaimed black bag lying around and alerted the crew. People panicked and tried to get off in a hurry. But Singh showed presence of mind. He picked up the bag and was about to throw it out when the bomb inside it went off. Singh was severely injured. His eyesight is almost gone, his hearing impaired and his right hand disabled.

Lind, Theriot make presence known immediately

The weather has put a damper on the start of the season, and the injury bug is hitting hard, meaning lots of opportunities for some previously unknown quantities. Here are this week's answers to the question: Who's he?

Adam Lind, OF, Blue Jays: Add another name to the list of super AL rookies this year. Impressive in an 18-game cup of coffee with the Jays last September when he hit .367 with a pair of home runs, Lind has been called up to help the Jays for real this season as the everyday left fielder. A candidate for the job in spring training, Lind will replace Reed Johnson, who is sidelined until July after electing to have surgery on a herniated disk in his back.

Despite being promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on July 25 last year, Lind was named MVP of the Double-A Eastern League, hitting .310 with 19 homers, 71 RBIs and a .900 OPS with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Statins may reduce the risk of developing cataract, late AMD

Statins may have protective effects on the development of both cataract and age-related macular degeneration, according to results from a population-based study.

Jennifer S.L. Tan, MD, and colleagues at the Center for Vision Research at the University of Sydney, Australia, examined the relationship between statin use and the long-term incidence of both cataract and AMD. All study participants were from the Blue Mountains Eye Study.

Out of 3,654 participants age 49 years or older at baseline, investigators re-examined 2,335 participants at 5 years and 1,952 at 10 years. Evaluations included stereoscopic macular photographs, which were graded using the Wisconsin Age-related Maculopathy Grading System, and lens photographs, graded using the Wisconsin Cataract Grading System.
