Julie Gilkay: Hoping for a clean sweep soon

For five years I've been making a wish list for how we could spend some of our money once we are done paying for day care.

Because day care isn't cheap (although teachers don't make squat) and we are paying for three, we have had to be more judicious in how we have spent our money. While we've been able to manage pretty much on one income for nearly two years since the birth of our third child, we haven't had a lot left over for unnecessary extras.

No weeklong family vacations at faraway places. No eye surgery to fix my nearsightedness. No new high-tech television and entertainment center. No new bedroom furniture for the boys' room.

But with my 5-year-old son going to kindergarten in fall, I've started taking another look at my list. I think I know right where I'm going to start when it's time.

Ivy Film Fest: A Field Guide

The Ivy Film Festival is now in its sixth year, and has grown to encompass an entire week of filmmaker lectures, industry panels, intimate workshops, free screenings of documentaries and ticketed screenings of warmed-over Sundance fare.

Though the casual attendee will most likely opt to attend the Variety Keynote Speech by Bourne Identity director Doug Liman, the opening night screening of Eagle vs. Shark or John Chos (Harold of Harold and Kumar) address concerning the difficulties of being a young Asian-American actor in Hollywood, the student film programs will always be the heart of the festival, its raison dtre, if unfortunately never its main attraction.

These more glamorous events may be important to maintaining a quality venue for student work and access to a well-connected panel of celebrity judges as the festivals mission statement slyly suggests, but heres hoping that this year they do not constitute a complete distraction from some of the notable student work on display.
